Duga Resa is my home, but I am enchanted by the Mrežnica River, just like all my fellow citizens. The bond with this green beauty is unbreakable for all of us who grew up and live along its shores. Some of the most beautiful memories happen on its waterfalls and in its gentle embrace during joyful summer months. A summer that passes without a swim in its fresh, emerald waters feels like one lost to oblivion.
The Mrežnica River is located in the Karlovac County region. Stretching 63 kilometers in length, it is known for its drinkable, crystal-clear water and numerous waterfalls along its course. As it approaches the city of Karlovac, the Mrežnica flows into the neighboring Korana River. It is a popular destination for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. A special charm is provided by the lush green vegetation that surrounds Mrežnica, and along the river, there are walking and cycling paths that allow visitors to enjoy nature.
Camping is a popular activity in the Mrežnica River area. The location offers peace and quiet in the heart of nature. Surrounded by forests, water, and the night sky full of stars, camping on the Mrežnica provides an unforgettable experience. In this region, everyone can feel deeply connected to nature and the local culture of Croatia. Whether you go alone, with friends, or with family, you can enjoy swimming, fishing, and walking in the great outdoors.
The most popular camping spot is Camp Slapić, located near Duga Resa, which offers accommodation as well as a restaurant and café right by the riverbank, with easy access to swimming areas.
Along the Mrežnica River, there are many natural beaches and swimming spots that provide perfect conditions for relaxation. One of the most famous swimming spots is in Generalski Stol, where the water flows over small waterfalls into natural pools. There are also numerous other places, such as Zvečaj and Primišlje, offering idyllic coves surrounded by greenery, perfect for family outings and picnics. Each swimming spot on the Mrežnica has its own unique charm, and its natural beauty attracts many visitors during the summer months.
The “Island of Love” is one of the most famous sites on the Mrežnica, located near Zvečaj. This little island, surrounded by turquoise-green water, is perfect for romantic getaways or peaceful retreats into nature. Many call it a paradise for couples because of its seclusion and beautiful surroundings. Visitors here can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or simply strolling along the shore, soaking in the idyllic atmosphere.
Beyond the river itself, the Mrežnica area offers many attractions for tourists. Karlovac is a historic city located at the confluence of four rivers (Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica, and Dobra). With its six-pointed star-shaped old town at the city’s core and historic fortresses, Karlovac is an ideal destination for history enthusiasts.
Duga Resa, a small town known for its textile industry and natural beauty, lies on the banks of the Mrežnica and takes great pride in this river. Mrežnica is distinguished by numerous tufa barriers that create magnificent waterfalls and natural lakes. These waterfalls are not only a visual delight but also popular swimming spots during the summer months. The water of the river is exceptionally clean and clear, making it perfect for activities like swimming, rowing, fishing, and canoeing.
