You can’t go to Brazil, especially Rio, and not experience samba!
The story of samba is truly fascinating, and visiting the Sambadrome as well as the so-called City of Samba, where the top-tier samba schools are based, offered a fascinating and detailed insight.
Brazilian samba is a lively dance and music genre with deep roots in African culture, brought to Brazil through the transatlantic slave trade.
It developed in the early 20th century in Rio de Janeiro, where African rhythms merged with European melodies and Indigenous elements. The name comes from the Angolan word “semba” (meaning “belly to belly”), referring to the dance’s closeness.
Samba is best known for its connection to the Rio Carnival, where samba schools organize spectacular parades featuring lavish costumes, vibrant dance performances, and themed floats.
These schools often originate from favelas (poor neighborhoods), giving them significant social and cultural importance.
The music often features vocals with themes ranging from love to social issues.
